fairfax county. one person is dead after a possible home invasion. it happens late last night in the 6800 block of field master drive. courtney robinson is live in springfield with the latest details. good morning. >> good morning. i have been talking with neighbors this morning. one neighbor tells me that her daughter heard a woman scream around 10:00 last night but did not know what that was. officers are not commenting on that and not releasing much information. i can tell you that after 10:00 last night they found a man shot to death inside of this house. 6810 field master drive. we don't know if anyone is in custody. but officers say that this does not appear to be random. this appears targeted, that no one is in danger. this is the orange hunt area of springfield. we are couple blocks away from

orange hunt elementary school. this is possibly a home invasion, according to officers. you can see that there are still units on the scene. this is live. this is a very residential area with the house is very close to one another. it's not clear who called police, but there was a gunshot involved. someone may have heard that. a d.c. police officer is under fire from an animal rights group this morning after fatally shooting a dog. it happened yesterday on 18th street during a street festival in adams morgan. sources tell us that the officer involved was an experienced dog handler. he saw two dogs fighting and tried to separate them. if the officer shot the dog after it charged the crowd. >> i heard a pop when i was walking up the street. i was hoping it was a firecracker or something not serious, but it ended up being

more serious. >> police will review the shooting incident. investigators are searching for the person or people who fired at two homes of two police officers in calvert county. a maryland state troopers house was shot dead friday night. saturday morning someone fired into a st. mary's county deputies house and vehicle. we have a traffic alert for commuters driving northbound on the 14th street bridge. there's a new traffic pattern that took effect an hour ago. the left shoulder is closed for the entire lentz of the 14th street bridge. all four lanes are being routed to the right of construction. the left exit lane, memorial bridge, allows drivers to exit before the work zone. congress gets back to work after an august recess and taxes are expected to dominate the agenda of the next few weeks. lawmakers will debate whether to extend the bush tax cuts set to

in our top stories at 6:15 on this monday, investigators are trying to piece together a deadly shooting in springfield, va if that happened after 10:00 last night in the 6800 block of field master drive. when officers arrived, they found a man had been shot to death. authorities do not think the shooting was random. redskins fans should be in a good mood this morning. the burgundy and gold started the season off with a victory. they beat the dallas cowboys last night's 13-7 at fedex field.

two men and women were living inside this house. 68 cen10 field master drive. speaking with neighbors, one neighbor tells me that her daughter heard a woman scream about the time the shooting took place. when officers arrived after 10:00 they found a man shot to death inside this house. this is a very quiet neighborhood, very residential. it is close to orange hunt elementary school. fairfax county officers say this was a targeted attack. it was not random. no danger to neighbors or anyone else in the area. it is not clear if they have anyone in custody. they are still out here on the scene investigating. the scene is secure. it is likely they will be here for some time. we will bring you the latest as

we get the information. courtney robinson reporting. an animal rescue organizations as the d.c. police officer used for excessive force when he shot and killed a dog. two dogs were fighting yesterday during a street festival in adams morgan. sources tell us that the officer tried to separate them when one of the dog bit him and charged that the crowd. they say the officer is an experienced a nine handler and shot the dog as a last resort. police are reviewing the incident. police are looking for a man suspected of causing a scare near an elementary school in rockville. the man approached and 11-year- old girl last thursday in a wooded area near beall elementary school. a man was dressed in black, wearing a ski mask. she was not hurt. >> she started to run away. he followed her a short distance and then stopped.

this is an area with a creek and the bench behind a soccer field. a lot of young people use this area. >> the girl reported the incident to her mother. police searched the area but did not find anyone. the principal sent out a letter alerting parents. traffic alert for drivers headed north on the 14th street bridge this morning. a new traffic pattern took effect at 5:00. the left shoulder is closed the entire length of the bridge. all four lanes are being routed to the right of the construction barrier. that left exit lane to the memorial bridge will still allow drivers to exit prior to the work zone. congress returns to capitol hill for what's expected to be a contentious few weeks of work. lawmakers are expected to fight over extending the bush tax cuts which will expire at the end of the year. republicans want to extend them, but the white house wants to get

be the avenue they go down? >> no, i think that's a good point, and john boehner has 55,000 fewer, but the white house is -- we see robert gibbs on the morning shows, including "good morning america," arguing that john boehner changed on tax cuts with remarks made. of course, john boehner says he hasn't. but the white house is arguing that they built john boehner up, that they focused on him, that they went and -- so they can now tear him down. he's now the face of republican leaders, and they can say this to voters, if you vote for a house republican majority, this is what you'll get. >> and if this happens, that the house and senate losing perhaps to the republicans, you could have a fallen leadership, too. >> that's right. politico just popped up a story saying everyone is talking about, what if they clean house, maybe have a few leaders, but the leadership would be completely new. of course, it is the most verboten topic on capitol hill.
